Win your own book trailer contest!

This is the fabulous make your novel come to life contest! Your chance to WIN your own book trailer for your novel of any genre.

Come join in on the fun! Your entry should be about a finished project or nearly finished so that you will end up with a fitting book trailer.

Okay, so the contest is for best hook/pitch. That is, how you would pitch your story. Here is an example from my middle grade fantasy novel:

Twelve year old Gabriel Stone’s life has been turned upside down. He never imagined anything affecting him like the disappearance of his mother--until he discovers a magical crystal, one that unlocks a portal into a parallel world…and a secret that will change his life forever.

So, it sometimes is the first line or two of your query...how you would sum up your work if you were trying to entice an agent or publisher.

The contest begins today and will end Monday, February 6th/2011at midnight. The winner will be announced here on my blog on Wednesday, February 8th...or there about. It will be judged by the amazing Megan Curd--YA urban fantasy author, Book trailer producer and freelance editor. Follow her on twitter at @megancurd. May the best hook win! If you're unsure of what a book trailer looks like, my own is below this post. You can check it out. Megan also did mine.

Please sign up in the linky below and then leave a comment with your hook/pitch in the comment section from now till the cut-off date. Good luck!

  2. This sounds like an awesome contest! Your pitch is really good. I want to read that book! I wish my book was at the stage where it was ready for a trailer.

  5. Bearing a mark signifying strength, strategic skill, and the ability to predict outcomes, you’d think sixteen-year-old Angelyn would be a shoe-in for the prestigious Knights Academy. Unfortunately, female knights are unheard of. If Angelyn wants to be one of the boys she will have to prove her worth and fight her way in.

  6. Good luck all... I wish I was at this stage.

  7. As he smacks the winning home run in the state high school championship, Clay Wilson gets hit by a powerful bolt of lightning. When he awakens days later, he is covered with burns and can’t walk -- but slowly learns his body has undergone fundamental changes. Changes that catch the attention of a covert government agency, Group D. The agency, which may have been behind the experiments on his father’s special forces squad during Desert Storm, wants to recruit Clay -- or at least capture him for tests. After escaping from them, Clay learns through a vision quest the horrible fate that could await the country, and maybe the whole world, if he doesn’t team up with Group D to fight a madman bent on destruction.

  12. Great contest! Here's my entry, consisting of the "hook" sentence plus back cover copy from the back of the book - if it is too long, just consider the first sentence as the "pitch" and ignore the rest :-)

    "Fairy Senses"

Eighth grade graduate Kelly Brennan is still reeling from the discovery that she is half-fairy when the nascent powers she barely understands attract the attention of new enemies, placing not only herself but also her family and friends in harm's way.

The fat, one-foot tall, miniature man with dragon wings that Kelly catches in her refrigerator, his ruddy face smeared with her fourteenth birthday cake, is not what she imagined a fairy would look like. But he proudly claims to be a "perfect specimen". Kelly soon learns that she herself is half-fairy, which means that everything she has ever been told about her absent father is a lie. Who was he and why has her mother been lying about him? Kelly vows to find out, but her plans are interrupted when US presidential candidate Marcos Witherings kidnaps her. He is a half-fairy too, and he wants another of his kind to help him in a twisted plan that far exceeds a simple desire to be US President. Kelly escapes and flees to the underwater fairy kingdom of Glendenland, where she must race to develop her fledgling "fairy senses" before it's too late.

  13. This is the pitch for ENCOUNTERS an MG/YA SF adventure

When the counter-intelligence operatives of MI8 came to pick Thursday's brain they brought a scalpel with them.

If it weren't for her total amnesia, Thursday would say anything to prevent the final stage of interrogation; anything except tell them she knows Ethan Sandling healed her, that he is the one they should have under their microscope.

Badly injured and the lone survivor of a traffic accident, Thursday is treated in hospital. When doctors realise her internal organs mirror normal human structure they consider Thursday an interesting anomaly. Then her burns and other injuries fade almost overnight, and she might as well have been marked BIO-ENGINEERED @TM ALIEN - and that's how Ethan planned it.

In ENCOUNTERS, twelve-year-olds, Thursday and Ethan learn who they are and what they aren’t – what it means to be human – when one of them is suspected of being alien and the other is... not from around here.

  14. Hi guys, some great entries! Good job. Just remember, it's a pitch not a query. I'm intiqued by your stories! Good luck!

  15. It's the offer of a lifetime and beyond. Widower Keith Lansing can bring his wife back, no strings attached. Keeping her here is another story all together...because she didn't return alone.

The above pitch comes from the description for my supernatural suspense novel LIVE AGAIN. My Google credentials are doing something weird, so I can most easily be reached through my website www.lrgiles.com. Great Contest!!

  16. Zed, a bright but troubled fifteen-year-old orphan subject to disturbing but revealing dream-visions, along with a small group of dissident families, must contend with the oppressive, prophecy-driven ways of their clan, as they attempt to overcome long odds to achieve his murdered parents' dream: a world without cruelty, ignorance, or greed.

Now, where Gabriel sees nothing but tragedy, others sense an opportunity, a way to bring the unwitting boy back down to earth. In the unfamiliar world of intrigue, power-struggles and religious fervor, Gabriel, a hero with no money, two swords and a few secrets of his own, finds himself in a fight not only for Erin's hand, but for his very life."

  19. Morgan-
(Would've just e-mailed you this question, but didn't see an e-mail address around here.) So, the link thing looks like it would link to a website or blogsite, right? But if you don't have one of those, then what do you put in there? Thanks for the info.
    Jim

  21. What a brilliant contest :)

I am really going to have to get this book of mine finished - I keep missing out on wonderful opportunities which require a completed manuscript!

    Thanks for the follow :)

  22. Hey Dominic. It doesn't have to be completely finished but you should have a synopsis and have a firm idea of the whole story. Otherwise the trailer would be useless after and may not fit your story. :)

  27. Of Poets and Angels, By C Scott Morris

Ethan was drunk when he stumbled across the dead man. Poets should be drunk, he firmly believed, and should not trip over dead men in the middle of the night.

  28. Manuscript Name: The Gypsy Princess
    By: Eleni Alexandraki
    Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

Drina Hendrix isn't like other girls at her new school: her new best friend is a well-meaning, but magic-wielding witch who wants to help her love life (which is already complicated enough thanks to a sexy 19th-century Irish ghost and the cutie from the local garage band), she’s made an enemy the first day of school, and her spectral grandmother is constantly interfering! To top it off, she discovers falling in love would fulfill a deadly gypsy curse placed on her family. Who says High School can't kill you?
