Gabriel Stone and the Divinity of Valta BOOK TRAILER

Below is the book trailer for my middle grade fantasy novel done by the amazing Megan Curd. You can follow her on twitter at @megancurd I think she did a fabulous job and it turned out pretty cool. So as I sit here in my hotel room in New York--excited and thrilled to be at the SCBWI conference starting for me tomorrow, (Yes, the meet the agents component today was sadly sold out.) Still, should be great tomorrow and the next day! But..back to what I was saying...while sitting here, I've been thinking...and thinking of my idea that has been brewing. A CONTEST! For you to win a fabulous prize! Stay tuned for upcoming details on your chance to win your own book trailer by Megan herself!!  Yes..WIN..for you! Yay! I decided to hire her as a gift to my fellow writers and she is amazing to work with...so it's a great prize to win! When I get home next week..maybe Tuesday...I will post details of the contest. Let me know what you think of my trailer? Happy weekend everyone. Keep warm!

  1. I'm liking the Indiana Jones-style fonts. Very cool! She did a great job. It's piqued my interest, so I'd say mission accomplished.

  2. Yeah, looks really good. And interesting. OK, the trailer is the part that looks good; the story is the part that seems really interesting. But, then again, I am a sucker for those kind of stories.

Wondering if you've read The Writers Journey by (I think) Chris Vogler. It's an interesting book, kind of a distillation of Joseph Campbell's "Hero with a Thousand Faces" but more aimed specifically at writers, discussing kind of the archetypes of characters and stories - and how to use them.

And this definitely looks like it's in the grand tradition of some of those. Hero loses someone close, ventures to a strange land, has to pull off some heroic feats to save the day, and then get back. It really is such great stuff, and has made for some classic stories.

    Good luck with it.

Btw, what is a SCWBI conference?

  4. Thanks, Colene and Jeff. Appreciate it.
J--> No I've never read that book you mentioned. I'll have to check it out. SCBWI=Society of children's book writers and illustrators. It's been a fun day for sure. Thank you so much for the compliment on the trailer! :)

  5. If you run into Norton Juster tell him Jeff Dyer said hello. Norton also happens to be an architect and I built some of his houses back in the seventies. Have fun Morgan.

  6. Badger, there are apparently over 1000 people here this year, so not thinking it's too likely but if I do, I will. ;)

  7. "Indiana Jones" meets "Lord of the Rings"
    thats right up adventure alley!
it the stuff that gets the kids out of the house and starts them exploring their corner of the world

  13. So, Morgan, are you back from the conference now? Are you gonna post some thoughts about it. What you might've learned, who you met? All that kinda stuff that the rest of us are wondering about? Or maybe it's already on here and I'm just missing it...

  14. Sure I will post about it next week after the contest is over. But I promise I will!

  15. Btw, I'm going to see if this works. If it does, I'll put a link in here to the book I mentioned.

    http://www.amazon.com/Writers-Journey-Mythic-Structure-3rd/dp/193290736X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1296616583&sr=8-1

This is the one for The Writer's Journey.

OK, so the way it shows up in my view here, it doesn't look like a link, but you can always copy 'n paste it into your browser line -- or whatever they call that line that takes you different places on the interwebs.

You can look at the customer reviews of the book -- that's what I always find most helpful.

I think it's a pretty interesting book. Kinda helps focus some storytelling kind of things, I think. (Wow, could I be more unintelligible at this point?)

This isn't something that purports to teach you a formula. But does show how certain archetypes have come from the Western storytelling tradition that we all write in. Especially, I think, in adventure type stories. When you read it, you just think (OK, at least I think): Wow, this really applies to all kinds of stuff, from King Arthur through Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter ... and probably Gabriel Stone.

I tend to read it and go... hey, that's weird -- I DO have that kind of character in this story. Anyway, you can check it out and see what you think.

OK, since I'm rambling on here... one other question. Do you ever think about, or have thoughts of "theme," when you're writing a story? And how does it affect your stories, if you do?

Hey, I want to give you something to blog about before the contest is done, y'know (just trying to help out, 'cause that's the kinda helpful sorta guy I am)...

  16. Thanks, J. I'm definitely looking into that. What's the J stand for? Do tell... I'd like to follow your blog as well or on twitter. Thanks for all of your thoughtful input. :)

  17. Well, I'm thinking about starting a blog. Or a website. But not sure I've got much of anything to say -- especially on a consistent basis. I'd hate to start one and have people think it's boring, y'know?

The consistent bit gives me 2nd thoughts too. Trying to write my other stuff, and spending a bit of time trying to have a life ... makes me wonder if I'd have time to do it, regularly, which I think you'd need to do. So... how do you manage to pull it off?

  18. Well, sometimes I don't post as often as I should really, so I know what you mean. lol but I bet you'd have things to say. What do you write? You sure do have great input. (Some of which I'll keep to myself.) :D Thanks!
